Istanbul's Balat neighborhood is one of the city's most colorful, filled with old houses and churches. A main marketplace dotted with antique stores and craft workshops is located here. Among the religious buildings to see are St. Stephen's Bulgarian Church (made of cast iron in Vienna and assembled on site), which is now used by Turkey's Greek Orthodox community; it has a beautiful example of 14th-century mosaics and frescoes inside. Also visit one of Istanbul's oldest synagogues, Ahrida Synagogue, which dates back to the 16th century.
It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the historic city of Istanbul.
