In order to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable experience, the Barnes Foundation strictly limits the number of people who are allowed into each gallery at any given time. The layout of the museum differs from that of more traditional institutions. According to Mr. Barnes's wishes, different paintings are squished together in the same space, which creates a strong visual impact for visitors. These works are neither arranged chronologically nor categorized by school or movement according to Mr. Barnes's wishes before he died. Impressionist, postimpressionist, surrealist, abstract expressionist and geometric abstractionist pieces all intermingle in their respective galleries competing for attention.
