The Beautiful Emerald Lake in the Yukon National Park 🇨🇦 during Autumn Season
The Emerald Lake, named after the color of its water, boasts breathtaking views even on the bridge leading to the hotel's parking lot. The combination of the wild forest and snow-capped mountains with the hotel's small wooden cabin restaurant creates an otherworldly sensation. Such an idyllic setting with a mix of both human habitation and pristine scenery can only be found in countries like Canada with vast and sparsely inhabited lands.
The starting point of the lakeside trail is right next to the parking lot, with a sign in the middle of the path that reads "Berry Season 🍒, beware of bears 🐻." Although the chances of encountering bears have been significantly reduced since the snowfall half a month ago, which created a one-meter-thick layer of snow, it is still recommended to make some noise while trekking in one of the world's best-preserved natural habitats.
Another charm of Emerald Lake is its crystal-clear water. Although the green color of the lake cannot be considered pure, a trekkers' information board at the beginning of the trail reminds hikers not to drink the water directly. However, visitors can still admire the underwater rocks and fallen trees. After a ten-minute walk, we arrived at a bush that extends up to halfway up the mountainside and is a favorite spot for herbivorous animals to forage. Soon enough, we spotted three moose grazing nearby.
The hotel provided us with a basket of firewood, which burned for about 3 to 4 hours. That was enough for us to sit in front of the fireplace and daydream. Although using a fireplace for heating is not energy-efficient, it was undoubtedly warm. Later on, I found myself opening the window to let in the sub-zero air outside, to avoid sweating.
Perhaps not many people choose to travel to the Rocky Mountains, but walking amidst the snowy landscape during the day and camping in a cozy log cabin at night seems to be the right way to experience Canada. Thinking about it, people have been doing the same thing for over a century now.
