After dinner with friends, take a slow walk to Independence Street and lstiklal Street in the New Town, a busy area in the center of downtown Istanbul. This street was home to embassies in the 19th century and played an important role in the political, economic and cultural life of Istanbul--and of the entire Ottoman Empire.
Today it's still bustling with stores, department stores and restaurants that are always crowded with people when you visit. There are many things to do on this street: shop for gifts or souvenirs; eat at one of its famous local dessert shops (Mado or Saiay); hop on one of the iconic red trolleys as they pass through; enjoy roasted chestnuts, roasted corn or bagels from street vendors; watch performers sing or dance in front of their shops; or just sit back and people-watch while enjoying a cup of Turkish coffee at one of many cafes located here!
