Life advice: Choose the off-season when visiting Italy 🇮🇹 to avoid being robbed.
When my boyfriend and I went to Italy, my best friend repeatedly reminded me before we left: "Make sure to dress modestly, don't make Italy another Tokyo. There are many thieves there, even my friends got robbed." I reassured her, saying I would never give them any opportunity.
So throughout the trip, I dressed in a very plain and poor-looking manner. How poor? Well, let's just say I pulled out my corduroy pants and grandma's old canvas shoes (in coffee color) that I had been saving for years. My boyfriend even commented, "This is a 'Milad' style from the last century." 🌆
Before going, we also bought a Pacsafe anti-theft bag online, which had great reviews (apparently designed by Australians who got scared of being robbed in Italy and came up with this idea, it's hilarious). I also had a small waist pouch (worn around my waist, hidden under my sweater. It's the kind where you have to open it up and show your belly when paying).
We were all set and ready to go.
Whenever our tour guide saw two gypsy people with painted faces, she would quickly tell us to take a detour.
My boyfriend had been to Italy twice before, while it was my first time. He had been robbed on his previous trips, but this time, following me, he didn't lose a single penny. He was so happy and now treats me as his savior, with an attitude of "I'm with the boss who has everything under control." So I definitely want to share these tips with everyone:
1. Dress as poor-looking as possible.
2. Walk confidently like a local! The more reserved you appear, the more it seems like you have money in your bag.
3. Ignore any sudden incidents: tomato sauce accidentally spilled on you, someone asking to take a photo of you, or if you accidentally step on someone's painting, etc. If someone tries to talk to you, just run away. Who cares what they are saying.
4. Always bring an anti-theft bag!
5. Going during the off-season can significantly reduce troubles, so be sure to enjoy a peaceful Italy during that time. 🌞
